Tour de France 2010

Nous sommes complet du 20-23 juillet 2010 pour le deux stages du Tour qui passe le Tourmalet.  Mais plein de place pour le moment au tour du 18 juillet pour l'Etape du Tour.  Difficile de dire ou vous pouvez trouver de la place.  Sûrement quelle que places reste à Luz mais si non essayer plus bas à Pierrefitte/Argeles/Lourdes ou dans le Val d'Azun.  Si non, de l'autre côté du Tourmalet l'Auberge "La Bergerie" à La Seoube est tenue par ma belle soeur Marie-Laure et mon beau-frère Matthieu (http://www.labergeriecampan.fr/).  Ils vous accueilleron avec plaisir.

We are full from the 20-23rd July 2010, i.e., when the two stages that go over the Col du Tourmalet pass through Luz.  For the moment we have plenty of space for the rest of summer, including the 18th July when the Monovélo Etape du Tour does the Pau-Tourmalet stage.  It is difficult to say where rooms are still available.  Of course if you are looking for the week 17-24th there are plenty of apartments still available for rent so feel free to contact us.  If you are looking for hotel rooms try Pierrefitte/Argeles/Lourdes or on the other side of the Tourmalet.  My sister and brother in law run a B&B in La Séoube (between the Col d'Aspin and the Tourmalet) and they have 5 rooms + a restaurant and bar.  Their website is: http://www.labergeriecampan.fr/.

Skiing Winter 2009-10

Forecasters are divided on the outlook for this winter.  There is a weak El Nino developing in the Pacific which may make winter slightly warmer than average.  I don’t think anyone should hope for a repeat of the masses of snow that fell last year, but there is no reason we shouldn’t be able to have a great time skiing this winter.

All the ski stations around have confirmed their ticket prices for Winter 2009-10.  They are as follows:

 

Luz Ardiden: 28€ or 22€ if you stay with a listed accommodation supplier (i.e., Hotel Les Templiers!).

Gavarnie-Gedre: 23€ or 20€ if you stay with us.

Barèges-Tourmalet: 32€ or 41€ including Pic du Midi.  No possibility to buy from us unfortunately.

 

If you want to ski for a week solid and are staying in Luz a good option is to take the “Puissance 3” pass which gives 6 days access to either Tourmalet or Luz Ardiden and one ride up to Pic du Midi.  It is 180€ for adults (30€ per day) and 150€ (25€ per day) for under 18s.  Families of 4 or more are all 150€ per person.

 

We are offering bed and breakfast (27€/33€ pp twin share low/high season) or half board (42€/47€pp twin share low/high season) accommodation in the hotel as usual.  High season prices are for Xmas/NY until the 3rd Jan and from the 13th Feb to the 8th March along with Friday and Saturday nights, unless you are staying more than two nights with the weekend included.

It is possible to access both Luz Ardiden and Gavarnie with the shuttle bus services.  Barèges is possible but less direct because you take the SNCF bus up to Barèges and then the shuttle to the station.  The times are good in the morning but not so convenient in the afternoon - a taxi down is often an easy option.  Hire cars are available from Lourdes train station and all airports.  If you hire a car ask for chains with it, just in case.

 

For the moment temperatures have dropped but we are still enjoying some gorgeous autumn weather.  So we've got a while before winter really hits us.  Hopefully we'll see you when it does.

Walking and Activity Holidays in the Pyrenees

The first two weeks in July are very busy but we then have space from the 17th July onwards. 

The activity and independent walking holidays can be booked any time from the 17th July onwards. 

The Discover the Pyrenees week with 4 days guided walking (with Mandy, an Irish guide who is a qualified French "accompagnateur" and who has lived and worked in the Pyrenees for the last 15 years) is still available for the following weeks:

18th - 25th July (Sat - Sat)

25th July - 1st August (Sat - Sat)

31st July - 7th August (Fri - Fri)

7th - 14th August (Fri - Fri)

Raquettes en Pays Toy / Snow Shoeing in the Pyrenees

Raquettes avec Raymonde

 

Cette année nous lançons une offre raquette avec une accompagnatrice en moyenne montagne (voir quelque photos des sorties en raquette de l’année dernière dans l’album Raquettes avec Raymonde).  L’idée est de profiter en semaine quand il y a peu de monde.  Raymonde va vous accompagner, assurer votre sécurité et expliquer le paysage qui déroule devant vous.  La randonnée en raquette d’hiver c’est tout autre chose que la randonnée en été.  La neige donne un aspect magique aux montagnes, elle sont plus définies mais il y a aussi plus de risques – une bonne raison de ce mettre entre les mains d’une professionnelle. 

 

Le séjour ce déroule du dimanche soir au vendredi soir.  Les sorties raquettes sont lundi, mardi, jeudi et vendredi - mercredi c’est repos.  Deux soirée de balnéo à Luzéa sont comprises pour détendre les muscles.  Vous êtes héberges pour 5 nuits (dimanche au vendredi matin) en B&B à l’Hôtel Les Templiers.  Il y a l’option demi-pension si vous voulez mais il y a des bons restaurants dans le quartier et ça vaut le coup de les essayer.  Notre restaurant-crêperie est ouvert vendredi-samedi-dimanche hors vacances scolaires, et tout les soirs pour les vacances. 

 

Cette année nous avons la chance d’avoir beaucoup de neige.  Mais les photos de l’année dernier montre que même avec moins on trouve toujours de quoi pratiquer les raquettes.  Les plaisirs d’être dehors, en plein nature, sont toujours là, et la randonnée ou raquettes en hiver vous donne la chance de voir la montagne de toute autre façon.  A 330€ par personne c’est aussi un séjour qui ne casse pas le budget.

This year we are launching a snowshoe week with Raymonde, a qualified local guide who has spent many winters walking the valleys of the “Pays Toy” around Luz St Sauveur.  We take advantage of mid-week conditions when there are few people around.  Raymonde, who speaks good English, will accompany you, ensure your security and explain what you are seeing as you go along.  Snow-shoeing in winter is altogether different from summer walking in the mountains.  The snow gives the mountains a magical quality; the white mantle seems to bring the mountains out in high definition, but there is also a greater risk.  A good reason to put yourself in the hands of a professional. 

 

Our trip starts on Sunday night when you book into the Hotel Les Templiers.  Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are spent out in the mountains.  Wednesday is a rest day.  Two evenings at the Luzea thermal spa facility are included to soothe the inevitable aches and pains.  Accommodation is 5 nights B&B at Les Templiers.  Half board is an option but there are good restaurants just around us that are well worth trying.  Our restaurant-creperie is open Friday-Saturday-Sunday in mid season and then every night in school holidays (Xmas and February). 

 

We’re lucky this year to have plenty of snow but the photos of last year (see the album Raquettes avec Raymonde) show that even during winters with less snow there is always enough for snow shoe outings.  And the main aim is really just the pleasure of being outside, in the mountains in a winter environment.  This trip gives you the chance to see the mountains in an entirely different way and at 330€ per person it’s also a credit crunch buster.
