Walking and Activity Holidays in the Pyrenees

This summer we are proposing a number of organised walking and activity holidays based from the hotel.  See the attached brochure for details and pictures.

The first two weeks in July are very busy but we then have space from the 17th July onwards. 

The activity and independent walking holidays can be booked any time from the 17th July onwards. 

The Discover the Pyrenees week with 4 days guided walking (with Mandy, an Irish guide who is a qualified French "accompagnateur" and who has lived and worked in the Pyrenees for the last 15 years) is still available for the following weeks:

18th - 25th July (Sat - Sat)

25th July - 1st August (Sat - Sat)

31st July - 7th August (Fri - Fri)

7th - 14th August (Fri - Fri)

Tourmalet Ouvert / Tourmalet Open

Le col du Tourmalet n'est pas officiellement ouvert, mais les cyclsites peuvent passer. C'est pas vraiment légal, c'est à vos risques et périls, mais depuis trois jours plusieurs clients de l'hotel on passé le col en vélo. (Un Irlandais, un Anglais et deux Basques espagnols).  Pour les voitures il faudra encore attendre quelques jours, les engins de déneigement travaillent encore du coté Barèges.

The  Tourmalet is not officialy opened, but cyclists may go through. Not really legal, the crossing is done at your own risks. However, in the past few days, severals hotel guests have been riding their bikes over the mighty Tourmalet.  Driving over the "col" is not yet possible, but should be permitted soon. Snow engines are working on the western side of the col.

Ouverture de l'hotel / Hotel Open

We’re back from our holidays in Australia and the hotel is open.  The mountains look fabulous – white tops from all the spring snow with beautiful green pastures and flowers in the valleys.  The rivers are full of rain and snowmelt.  It is definitely one of the most beautiful times of the year and provides a lovely welcome back.

Note that the Col du Tourmalet isn’t open yet (it is always open by the 10th June and sometimes slightly before).  The best way to get to us if you are coming from the east and want to go over the mountains is via Bagnere de Bigorre and then the very pretty road between Montgaillard and Lourdes.  It has great views of the Pyrenees and the Pic du Midi de Bigorre.  The Col d’Aubisque and the Aspin are open however the road between the Aubisque and the Soulor is apparently not yet open.  Two cyclists staying for a couple of days went through on their bikes but don’t try in the car.

If you are coming from Toulouse we highly recommend stopping off at St Bertrand de Comminges.  Roman ruins, huge cathedral on the path to Santiago de Compostella, fortified village, very pretty foothill valley.  Its well worth it.  For excellent views of the Pyrenees get off the motorway and onto the D938 which goes through Capvern, the Abbey of Escaladieu and the Fort of Gaston Febus to Bagnere de Bigorre.  Its a bit windy but the views are great, particularly from the Gaston Febus fort which is also worth a stop.

 

Nous sommes rentré d’Australie en plein de forme (sauf un peut de décalaghoraire).  L’hôtel est ouvert.  Premier jours de beau apparement pour le printemps.  Les montagnes sont superbe avec de la neige en haut et les fleurs en bas.

A noter : le Col du Tourmalet n’est pas encore ouvert.  Il y a toujours plein de neige.  Comme chaque année il sera ouvert vers le 10 juin.  Alors il faut faire le tour par Bagnere de Bigorre et le tres jolie route entre Montgaillard et Lourdes.  Vue superbe sur les Pyrénées et le Pic du Midi.  Deux cyclists qui reste a l’hôtel en se moment nous dit que l’Aubisque est ouvert mais la route entre Aubisque et Soulor n’est pas encore (possible en vélo mais peut-etre pas en voiture).

 

Weekend des Espagnoles / Spanish Weekend

Week-end de St Nicolas 5-7 Décembre.

 

Beaucoup d’Espagnoles pour l’Immaculada et la fête de la constitution.  Comme nous avons de la neige ils sont profitée en masse après deux ans ou la neige été pas arrivée si tôt.  Une bonne commencement de la saison. 

 

Plus de neige annoncé pour cette semaine.  Alors allons pour un week-end dans les Pyrénées.

 

 

1st big weekend of the season

 

Our faithful Spanish clients arrived “en masse” this weekend, taking advantage of the three day weekend associated with their Constitution Day and the Fete of the Immaculate Conception, and the fact that there is lots of snow in the Pyrenees.  A good start to the season.

 

More snow is forecast for tomorrow and Wednesday.  So get to the Pyrenees for great value for money skiing.

Automne 2008 - Autumn 2008

Just a quick note with some commentry on the October 2008 photos.  We often have family to stay at this time of year and I am always amazed at how beautiful it is.  There are no tourists to be seen which is a pity because the colours are fabulous (you can pick your altitude to some extent so that you will see some autumn color no matter when you come in October).  This year we were particularly lucky because there was some early snow around the 25th October which made it all even prettier.  As you can see from the photos we we able to get up to the carpark in the Cirque de Troumouse which is above 2 000m and also got up to the Saugé Plateau.  October is also a great time of year to be eating in local restaurants because there is a mass of local produce available. 

Neige dan Les Pyrénées / Snow in the Pyrenees

Neige dans Les Pyrénées

La saison d’hiver commence tôt dans les Pyrénées.  Depuis cinq semaines nous avons eu de la neige en altitude (en haut de 1500m) chaque semaine.  C’est fabuleux pour les stations de ski au tour de nous (Luz Ardiden, Barèges-La Mongie et Gavarnie-Gedre).  Deux fois la neige a tombé dans Luz village à 700m (aujourd’hui c’est tout blanc au tour).  Alors, bienvenue l’hiver.  Ça va pas dire que le réchauffement du climat est un mythe, juste que chaque année il nous arrive quel que chose de différent est que on va avoir des bonnes et des mauvaise années dans les années à venir.  Alors profitée cette année qui semble d’avoir très bien commencée.  En plus, les Pyrénées français sont une destination bien moins chère que les Alpes  - de quoi réfléchir quand les infos économiques sont de plus en plus instables.

Snow in the Pyrenees

The winter season has started early in the Pyrenees.  For five weeks we’ve had snow above 1500m every week.  It started mid October and has been white ever since.  This is fabulous news for the three ski stations around us (Luz Ardiden, Barèges-La Mongie et Gavarnie-Gedre).    Twice snow has fallen in Luz village at 700m (today it is all white outside).  Welcome to winter!  Of course this doesn’t mean that global warming has disappeared off the radar – just that we’ll have good and not so good seasons in the years to come.  So take advantage of the great snow this year and get to the Pyrenees.  It is a great credit crunch beater as well – skiing in the Pyrenees is about half the price of skiing in the Alps.  For everything (accommodation, ski hire, lift passes, lessons).  Check out our mid-week winter deals which represent great value for money.
